THE CONSTRUCTION OF A BIO-POND
Size and shape of a bio-pond
The size and shape of bio-pond can be chosen to meet the client’s taste and harmonize with the landscape, without strict requirements.
Choosing the site
The bio-pond must not be built in low areas where cold air can settle, and it should be situated where the water plants are protected from strong winds.
Sections of a bio-pond
The swimming area in a bio-pond is completely free from water plants, and it is lined with a waterproof membrane. The water plants are situated in the phyto-depurating area under a thin layer of gravel. The banksides that border with the swimming area are shallow and their function is to regenerate the water. The recirculation pump drives the purified water from the regeneration areato the swimming area. The “depuration pond”, measuring about 30% of the swimming area, is built upstream and contains the water plants. A small water fall connects the two basins, providing clean water from an artificial spring. The skimmers collect impurities and natural filters complete the purifying job.
Having a source of water, like a well, a water spring or a rainwater collection system near the area where the pond is to be built, greatly helps in saving money. It helps in filling the pond the first time, it is ideal for water replenishment during hot summer months and is useful for cleaning.
Power connection is necessary for the pumps, the filters and the lighting system.
Plant MaintenanceMay is the right time to start checking the plants in the pond, cutting away the dead leaves and removing debris from the bottom that may have collected during the winter.
The different stages in the construction of a biolake
The waterlilies, which may have multiplied, should be thinned out so that they don’t suffocate the other plants, thus restoring balance inside the bio-pond. A part from being beautiful, water lilies are essential in providing the necessary shade in the water reservoir, keeping it cooler and reducing weed growth. Spring is also the right time to revive your pond, with new water plants.
Some clouding of the water is natural and will not damage the health and balance of this ecosystem. Nevertheless, it may be avoided by adding natural products that are available on the market, and the water will regain its clearness.
It is important to remember to maintain the water level required by the bio-lake or bio-pool and to restore the level with water coming directly from an available source. The water from a fountain or a well can be readily used after testing, to make sure it has the necessary safety requisites.
Important advice: 1. Even though it may be enjoyable to have a swim with household pets, it is advisable not to allow them inside the swimming pool, to protect the lining and other parts of the system. 2. Remember to wash off any sun screen lotion or other cosmetics before taking a swim, as to not pollute the water of your bio-pond.
In spring, the season for your bio-pond begins, with nature blossoming in it and all around it. It is time to enjoy its peacefulness and the sound of the waterfall.
